The American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar (AMCHAM Myanmar) was established on October 31, 2013. To date, more than 170 companies employing over 20,000 Myanmar nationals have joined the Chamber. These companies represent a diverse collection of industries and nationalities, with a common goal to expand American business and promote the highest business standards in Myanmar.

Recent political developments in Myanmar have led to the imposition of targeted sanctions by the US, UK and EU in the past month. As a result of the measures imposed, businesses may face immediate challenges in doing business in, or with, the state. Another challenge businesses will face is the prospect for additional sanctions.

Andre Gan

Partner, Mergers & Acquisitions (Kuala Lumpur)


Andre Gan is a corporate and securities partner who also heads Wong & Partners' Competition Group. His practice areas covers mergers and acquisitions, corporate securities, venture capital and private equity, and competition. He has been acknowledged by Chambers Asia Pacific as one of only two Band 1 practitioners for Corporate/M&A in Malaysia (as of 2019) and also as a recognised competition practitioner.


Andre also serves as the managing partner of Baker McKenzie's Yangon office, and he leads the team of lawyers and paralegals there in areas such as mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investments and general corporate, commercial and regulatory work. He has worked in the Singapore and London offices of Baker McKenzie.


Andre has undertaken numerous local and cross-border transactions relating to private M&A and public company take-overs and acquisitions, IPOs, placements, joint ventures, strategic alliances and other business combinations. He has acted on numerous M&A transactions involving auction sales, representing both bidders and vendors in industries such as insurance, banking, oil and gas, oleochemicals and manufacturing. Andre regularly acts and has led many multi-jurisdictional transactions in the region. In his competition law practice, Andre and his team regularly advise on competition law issues, assist in regional merger control analyses and filings, and assist clients in investigations and raids by competition authorities.

Mini VandePol

Registered Foreign Lawyer, Dispute Resolution (Hong Kong)


Mini vandePol is the Chair of Baker McKenzie's APAC Compliance & Investigations Group, and previously served as the Global Head. Mini's experience spans over 30 years focusing on a variety of compliance risks including anti-bribery, anti-money laundering and trade sanctions investigations and risk management and mitigation in China, India and other parts of Asia in a variety of industries.


Mini is a member of the World Economic Forum's Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI), is on the WEF's Global Future Council and currently holds the position of Vice President of the Women's White Collar Defense Association (HK Chapter). In 2020 Mini was awarded "Top 100 Women in Litigation" (White-collar crime, China and Hong Kong) by Benchmark Asia Pacific. In 2019 Mini was named "Best in White Collar Crime" Euromoney Asia Women in Business Law Awards and "Woman Lawyer of the Year" in The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards. She is also named as one of the "Top 100 Women in Investigations" by Global Investigations Review.

Tristan Grimmer

Partner, International Commercial and Trade (London)


Tristan is a Partner in Baker McKenzie's London office and co-Chair of the EMEA Compliance & Investigations practice. His practice is focussed on advising clients on compliance with trade sanctions, export controls and anti-bribery laws, as well as related internal and agency-led investigations. He has counselled clients on the management of investigations by the Office for Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the National Crime Agency (NCA), the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), and the US Department of Justice (DOJ). Tristan has also spent time working in Baker McKenzie's Chicago office. Tristan also advises clients, including Chinese investors, on foreign investment review issues, under both the existing UK regime and the newly introduced National Security and Investment Bill. Tristan has been recognised as a "Next Generation Lawyer" by the UK Legal 500 directory.

Alison Stafford Powell

Partner, International Commercial and Trade (Palo Alto)


Alison Stafford Powell has counsels companies on cross-border outbound trade compliance focusing in the areas of export controls, trade and financial sanctions, anti-terrorism controls, as well as anti-corruption and anti-money laundering rules, US anti-boycott laws, and US foreign investment restrictions. With her background also in EU and UK trade restrictions, she helps non-US companies navigate conflicting compliance obligations and risks under US and EU trade rules. She is a dual US/English qualified lawyer and has worked in the Firm's London, Washington, DC and Palo Alto offices since 1996.


Ms. Stafford Powell advises on all aspects of outbound trade compliance, including compliance planning, risk assessments, licensing, regulatory interpretations, voluntary disclosures, enforcement actions, internal investigations and audits, mergers and acquisitions and other cross-border activities. She develops compliance training, codes of conduct, compliance procedures and policies. She has particular experience in the following sectors: technology/cloud/IT services, financial services, travel/hospitality, telecommunications, and manufacturing.

Kenneth See

Partner, Mergers & Acquisitions (Yangon)


Kenneth is a partner in Baker McKenzie Limited's Mergers & Acquisition Practice Group in Yangon. He joined Baker McKenzie following a six-year stint with SGX-listed and Myanmar-based Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd. (Yoma), where he was most recently the managing counsel of group legal leading a 20-member legal and corporate secretarial team that supported corporate functions and business operations across the group's various segments, including in real estate, automotive, agriculture, healthcare, tourism and consumer products.


His practice is focused on M&A transactions and joint ventures. He also advises on general corporate law and other Myanmar-based regulatory and compliance issues.

Ivy Tan

Associate, Tax and Trade (Singapore)


Ivy is a tax and trade lawyer with Baker & McKenzie's Singapore office.


Ivy advises clients on a broad range of trade and customs matters, including cross border supply chain strategies, customs valuation and classification, use of free trade agreements and special customs areas, import and export restrictions, export control and sanction, trade remedies, customs audit and controversies, and other domestic regulatory issues. Ivy also advises on direct and indirect tax issues and is experienced in tax and supply chain planning.


Ivy has broad regional experience in trade and customs matters having previously worked at Baker & McKenzie's Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong offices, prior to joining the Singapore office.
