The American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar (AMCHAM Myanmar) was established on October 31, 2013. To date, more than 170 companies employing over 20,000 Myanmar nationals have joined the Chamber. These companies represent a diverse collection of industries and nationalities, with a common goal to expand American business and promote the highest business standards in Myanmar.

Event Details

Twice in two years, a new cyber "law" draft has been leaked and shared with various stakeholders in Myanmar. The confusing stakeholder engagement process, concerning regulations, and inconsistencies with international norms presented significant challenges for the private sector, journalists, and more.

Please join us as we walk through with BGA some of the key provisions in the draft shared earlier this year, and some updates on where the draft stands today. This session will have plenty of time for Q+A and discussion.

Dr. Zaw Oo

Managing Director of BowerGroupAsia, Inc.

Zaw Oo is an economist dedicated to inclusive development and economic transformation in Myanmar. Having worked in various roles as a community advocate on civic empowerment to a top advisor for economic reforms in Myanmar, his knowledge and competency spans a diverse range of portfolios and policy issues, from minimum wage setting in labor market reforms to natural resource governance of the country’s extractive industries.

He is also a highly respected policy analyst of the country as a founder and executive director of the Centre for Economic and Social Development, an independent and non-profit think-tank advising and designing major economic reforms of Myanmar since 2012. He also played a leading role in Myanmar’s reengagement with the international community. He was a chief negotiator of the Paris Club negotiations on Myanmar’s debt relief programs in 2013 before the country was reintegrated into international financial institutions. He served as the first national coordinator from 2012 to 2017 for the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, an Oslo-based international organization, in facilitating major reform initiatives in energy and mining sectors.

He spent decades of studying and working outside Myanmar. He holds graduate degrees in international development, banking, and finance from the School of International and Public Affairs in Columbia University and the School of International Service from American University. He also receives executive training from Harvard University, Oxford University and Turin University on public finance, energy and labor economics. He has held fellowships and research positions in various capitals of the world including Chiang Mai University of Thailand, National University of Singapore, Institute of World Politics and Economics of Vietnam, Stockholm School of Economics of Sweden, Chr. Michelsen Institute of Norway, and United States Institute of Peace.
