The American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar (AMCHAM Myanmar) was established on October 31, 2013. To date, more than 170 companies employing over 20,000 Myanmar nationals have joined the Chamber. These companies represent a diverse collection of industries and nationalities, with a common goal to expand American business and promote the highest business standards in Myanmar.

Please join us for a special session with Dr. Bart Minten, head of the Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA), for a briefing on their latest paper, Beyond emergency relief: What will it take to ensure a resilient recovery for agriculture and the rural economy of Myanmar.MAPSA is a joint project of USAID and the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT) and is implemented by the International Food Policy Research Institute.

Using nationally representative survey data and a variety of economic analyses, MAPSA's paper explores three questions,

What were the drivers of and constraints to rural transformation in Myanmar over the decade preceding COVID-19?
How did COVID-19 affect agri-food system participants and how were they able to adapt before and following the military coup in 2021?
What are the expected consequences of coup-induced state failure during the COVID-19 pandemic for poverty and food insecurity?

The paper concludes with implications and recommendations for sustainable and inclusive rural economic recovery in Myanmar.

Bart Minten

Senior Research Fellow/ Program Leader of the Myanmar Strategy Support Program at CGIAR: Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research

Bart Minten, a Belgian citizen, joined IFPRI as a senior research fellow in December 2006 and works with the Development Strategy and Governance Division. He is the program leader of the Myanmar Agricultural Policy Support Activity (MAPSA), focusing on research, capacity building, and outreach and communication of research related to food and agricultural issues in Myanmar. He worked before in Addis Ababa (2011-2020) as the program leader of the Ethiopia Strategy Support Program and in the New Delhi Office (2006-2011) where his work focused on agricultural value chains in South Asia. Prior to joining IFPRI, he was a senior research associate for the Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program in Madagascar. He also has held the position of assistant professor at the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Economics, KU Leuven, as well as teaching positions at Cornell University and the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Bart received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Cornell University (USA) and his bio-engineering degree from the K.U.Leuven (Belgium).
