The American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar (AMCHAM Myanmar) was established on October 31, 2013. To date, more than 170 companies employing over 20,000 Myanmar nationals have joined the Chamber. These companies represent a diverse collection of industries and nationalities, with a common goal to expand American business and promote the highest business standards in Myanmar.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar proudly presents a briefing by U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar Thomas L. Vajda on the current political and economic situation for members of the U.S. business community.

This event will focus on the political and economic update from the U.S. Ambassador.

This session will be conducted under Chatham House Rule and is off-the-record.

Ambassador Thomas L. Vajda

U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar

Thomas L. Vajda was confirmed by the United States Senate to be the United States Ambassador to Myanmar on November 18, 2020, received his presidential appointment on December 1, and was sworn in on December 16.

Mr. Vajda most recently served as Senior Advisor in the Bureau of South and Central Asian (SCA) Affairs, overseeing U.S. policy towards and relations with the countries in the region.

From August 2019 to May 2020 Mr. Vajda was the SCA Deputy Assistant Secretary of State with responsibility for India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Maldives. From October 2018 until July 2019, he served as SCA Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Security and Transnational Affairs. From July 2017 to October 2018, Mr. Vajda was Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South Asia. Prior to that, he served as U.S. Consul General in Mumbai from 2014-2017.

Mr. Vajda joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor. He has served overseas in Northeast and Southeast Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans, and at the State Department headquarters in Washington, D.C. Prior to Mumbai, his previous postings included Deputy Chief of Mission in Myanmar, Director of the Middle East Partnership Initiative, and Deputy Coordinator for Assistance to the Middle East.

Mr. Vajda holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University and a Master’s Degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He is married to Amy Sebes, and they have two daughters.
