Thematic focus areas for 08-November
- FATF Decision - This AMCHAM Myanmar Business Insights Today will focus heavily on the outcome of the October FATF meeting. To support members, we will host FATF Expert and former senior US Treasury official Mr. Alex Zerden as a guest speaker. Bring all your remaining questions on FATF to this meeting. We will have a candid and casual exchange drive by member concerns.
Biographical Information
Alex Zerden is a trusted advisor helping organizations, ranging from early- and growth-stage FinTech, digital asset, blockchain, and emerging technology companies to large, established corporations and nonprofits, navigate complex regulatory, legal, public policy, and geopolitical issues. As a regulatory lawyer, economic policymaker, and financial diplomat, Alex brings extensive public and private sector experience at the intersection of financial services and law with a focus on financial regulation, economic crisis response, anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT), economic sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), anti-corruption, financial enforcement and oversight investigations, and public-private partnerships. During his time in government, Alex co-authored the Obama-Biden Administration's FinTech strategy while at the White House National Economic Council and also designed and launched FinCEN Exchange, the public-private information sharing partnership between financial regulators, law enforcement, and financial institutions. Alex has published on issues involving AML/CFT, economic sanctions, anti-corruption, cybersecurity, and FinTech, including with the AmericanBanker, Brookings Institution's LawfareInstitute, Center for American Progress, the New York University School of Law Center on Law and Security, and other outlets. Alex is a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Term Member, a Senior Advisor to geopolitical risk firm WestExec Advisors, and an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) through the Energy, Economics, and Security (EES) Program. Alex received his B.A., cum laude, from Tufts University, and his J.D., summa cum laude, from the American University Washington College of Law.

The AMCHAM Myanmar Business Insights Today is a regularly scheduled policy-focused general meeting available to the AMCHAM Myanmar membership. The Business Insights Today meeting gives members a chance to connect with other members in a members-only environment to hear updates from the AMCHAM Myanmar team on policy-related activities, connect with board members, and share insights about development on the ground in Myanmar. Committee Co-Chairs, AMCHAM Myanmar industry leaders, the Executive Director and board members will serve as "anchor" hosts, igniting conversation among the participants and sharing general insights and updates about the operational situation in Myanmar. This is a great 1-hour meeting to quickly brush up on Myanmar business issues in an efficient format to help understand key updates affecting our community.
All members from all sectors are invited to participate in the AMCHAM Myanmar Business Insights Today meeting. This series occurs every 3 weeks and the meetings are organized thematically by updates and developments affecting businesses operating in Myanmar. Occasionally, and at the discretion of the Executive Director, there may be invited guest speakers or observers from the U.S. government, however, that is not the primary focus of this series.
This series is a Zoom meeting so all participants will be able to see and hear each other (this is not a webinar). All participants in the meeting are expected to participate (by asking questions, contributing information, etc) and are encouraged to use the camera when speaking during the meeting if possible. These can be helpful sessions for all businesses so kindly help us help you by giving your full participation and attention if you attend the AMCHAM Myanmar Business Insights Today meeting. We will begin promptly on-time with a lightning round of introductions to allow for maximum participation.
This session will be conducted under Chatham House Rule and is off-the-record.
