Regulatory and Compliance expert and former US Treasury official Alex Zerden of Capitol Peak Strategies will join AMCHAM members for a virtual meeting to discuss the upcoming FATF plenaries that will take place in June and October. Many of our members will fondly remember Mr. Zerden's past presentations to AMCHAM Myanmar - this time we are pleased to welcome him back for another substantive update on FATF issues facing Myanmar. AMCHAM Advisor Tatum Albertine and Executive Director Danny Kyaw will jointly facilitate a robust discussion among members and Mr. Zerden. Please come ready with your questions, comments, and concerns with the upcoming FATF plenaries.

As companies prepare and look out for potential changes to the financial landscape in Myanmar, these upcoming FATF plenary meetings could have an impact on all businesses with banking relationships in Myanmar and regional hubs in Thailand and Singapore. Since Myanmar's blacklisting in 2022, the impacts on Myanmar's formal economy and the people of Myanmar, particularly through perceived reduced access to formal and legal international financial services, have been somewhat measured since FATF has not yet encouraged the use of "countermeasures." The upcoming plenaries for the FATF organization could potentially change course for businesses operating in Myanmar.

Please join AMCHAM for this discussion-based virtual roundtable to learn from a true subject matter expert on the impacts of FATF countermeasures and the FATF institution, Mr. Alex Zerden. Mr. Zerden previously worked on FATF issues in the US government, has published on FATF in the Brookings Institution's Lawfare, and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal.

Topics covered in this virtual roundtable discussion will include the relevant timeline for FATF/Myanmar issues, a short orientation to the FATF organization, and an overview of potential outcomes at the upcoming plenaries and more.

Alex Zerden is a trusted advisor helping organizations, ranging from early- and growth-stage FinTech, digital asset, and emerging technology companies to large, established corporations and nonprofits, navigate complex regulatory, legal, public policy, and geopolitical issues.

As a regulatory lawyer, economic policymaker, and financial diplomat, Alex brings extensive public and private sector experience at the intersection of financial services and law with a focus on financial regulation, economic crisis response, anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT), economic sanctions, anti-corruption, financial enforcement and oversight investigations, and public-private partnerships.

During his time in government, Alex co-authored the Obama-Biden Administration's FinTech strategy while at the White House National Economic Council and also designed and launched FinCEN Exchange, the public-private information sharing partnership between financial regulators, law enforcement, and financial institutions.

Alex has published on issues involving AML/CFT, economic sanctions, anti-corruption, cybersecurity, and FinTech, including with the American Banker, Brookings Institution’s Lawfare Institute, Center for American Progress, the New York University School of Law Center on Law and Security, and other outlets.

Alex is a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Term Member, a Senior Advisor to geopolitical risk firm WestExec Advisors, and an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) through the Energy, Economics, and Security (EES) Program.

Alex received his B.A., cum laude, from Tufts University, and his J.D., summa cum laude, from the American University Washington College of Law.

Tatum Albertine is an international business advisor with several years of global leadership experience involving government relations, policy advocacy, developing international business partnerships, and supporting strategic business initiatives. She connects people to resources and translates vision and strategy into operations.

Tatum previously served as the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar for 3.5 years where she has helped U.S.-based organizations to connect with valuable opportunities in Myanmar and advocated on behalf of AMCHAM members to promote economic prosperity for communities within Myanmar and the U.S. She oversaw all operational and programmatic aspects of AMCHAM Myanmar during the dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the coup facing Myanmar since February 2021. She now consults for AMCHAM as an advisor.

Her background as a professional researcher with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and the Access to Knowledge for Development Center at The American University in Cairo has enabled her to excel at navigating and managing governmental affairs and policy advocacy work. She also worked for the U.S. Department of State at the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Myanmar, and at the Smithsonian Institution after graduating cum laude from Mount Holyoke College with her B.A. in Gender Studies and Philosophy.

In 2020, she was awarded the Executive of the Year award at the 2020 APAC Chamber of Commerce Awards for leading AMCHAM Myanmar in her first year as Executive Director.

Danny Kyaw is a dynamic business consultant with over thirteen years of experience in international advisory, government relations, supporting strategic business initiatives and developing international business partnerships. He specializes in business development and building positive relationships with key stakeholders and organizations in Myanmar.

He previously worked at PwC in Myanmar where he led multiple international development projects in various sectors to prepare the market for adoption of international standards. He has also worked at the Australian Trade & Investment Commission (Austrade) at the Australian Embassy in Yangon promoting commercial ties between Myanmar and Australia across all sectors. At Austrade, he organized a variety of high-level delegations, trade missions, seminars, and events linking international business to valuable opportunities in the Myanmar market where Australian exports to Myanmar are valued at $170+ million annually. He has a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Curtin University in Australia.

Danny serves as the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar where he helps U.S. business connect with valuable opportunities in Myanmar and advocates on behalf of AMCHAM members to promote economic prosperity for communities within Myanmar and the U.S. He oversees all operational and programmatic aspects of AMCHAM.
